Vittorio Lane, 36, of Sykesville, has been arrested and charged in connection to a string of recent church burglaries throughout the county, the sheriff's office announced on Wednesday, July 26.

Lane's unholy union with the law began on Thursday, May 25, and continued through Tuesday, July 4, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

Parishes targeted by Lane include:

  • Seventh Day Adventist Church on Jefferson Pike on Thursday, May 25;
  • Grace Community Christian Church on Yellow Springs Road on Friday May 26;
  • St. John Catholic Church on East Second Street on Sunday, May 28;
  • New Life Church on Jefferson Pike on Monday, June 12;
  • People's Church on Carpenter Road on Tuesday, July 13;
  • Calvary Assembly of God on Woodsboro Pike on Tuesday, June 20;
  • Monocacy Valley Church on Old National Pike on Sunday, July 2.

Detectives were ultimately able to link Lane to the burglaries after he used one of the credit cards stolen from one of the churches at several local stores, officials said.

Charges against lane were filed on Tuesday, July 25, when he was hit with multiple burglary, theft, and other charges in Frederick County. Additional charges from state police are still pending.

He is being held at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center without bond.

"Through collaborative efforts with (Frederick County Police Department) and (state police), we were able to successfully find and arrest the suspect tied to these church burglaries,” Col. Dave Benjamin, Chief Deputy of the sheriff's office said.

“It’s a shame this individual felt the need to steal from churches and we are glad we are able to bring this series of burglaries to a close.”
